Turning
Turning is the process by which metal is cut from the rotating surfaces of a workpiece by a single-edged tool (turning chisel). A basic distinction is drawn between i.d. and o.d. turning. As a rule, it is the workpiece that carries out the cutting movement and the tool the feed and fast-forward movement. Whether the surface (roughness) to be obtained is coarse, medium or fine is determined by the subsequent application of the workpiece (e.g., bearing seat with defined fit) and by economics (e.g., number of workpieces to be produced).
